A Giant Celebration

After the Giants won the world series. Again. On Sunday night…we took to the streets like proper San Franciscans so we could dance, take turns wearing a giant panda head, posture, pose, laugh, share a bottle of jack, collect high fives from strangers, and celebrate with our fellow city-dwelling fans. We saw a lot of love and high spirits…but not any vandalism or major destruction. Yes there were some fires in the street, but they were contained and police were plentiful.

Here are some iPhone snaps from the evening…

That Historic Game One

Andy and I were some of the luckiest individuals in baseball fandom to attend the historic Game One of the 2012 World Series where the Giants beat the stripes off the Tigers 8-3. I took turns shooting with my Nikon and my iPhone, listening to the radio, donning a panda hat, clapping, singing, dancing, and mostly whooping, hollering and chanting for my boys. Seeing those homeruns by Panda was unreal. I remember feeling incredulous after he hit the first one…and then he kept going. Just wow. Lincecum threw flawlessly, coming in to relieve Zito, who also pitched beautifully. There were Cy Young winners all over the place. And for the crowd at AT&T–fired up for another world series birth, fired up to be at home for the opener and relishing the lovely indian summer weather that is classically SF–it was a total party.

#547: Getting Ready…

Opening day is just around the corner…
Can’t wait!

Humm Baby!

In honor of the Giants home opener tomorrow, I am sharing some momentous photos that I’ve delayed posting until now.

Last November, I had the luck and great fortune to attend NLCS game 4 and watch the Giants defeat the Phillies in another nail-biting, torturous, but ultimately triumphant game. Little did I know then, (though I didn’t stop believing) they would go on to make history in San Francisco and win the whole thing.

So, here is a little piece of 2010 SF baseball, so you can see what you missed, relive all of last year’s glory, or just gear up for the coming season.

World Series Champs.
I can still hardly believe it.

* * * * *

Mom and I took the ferry from Vallejo straight to the park. And enjoyed some surprisingly good bloody marys on the way.

I think every single person on board was in Giants gear.

It was a beautiful day for a ballgame.

The kayakers were all ready for some home runs.

The park was electric.

And the excitement was palpable.

There’s nothing like going to a playoff game.

We all felt lucky just to be inside.

And celebrated with hot dogs.

It really is a lovely ballpark.

And you can’t ask for better fans.

There was a lot of pomp.

And circumstance.

Unfortunately there were also some yucky Philly fans…right behind us.

Luckily, they didn’t have much to celebrate in the end.

Three special guys were on hand to throw out three ceremonial first pitches.

Finally, the game began.

And what a game it was.

We were up.

Then, we were down.

Then we took the lead again.

But in the 8th, the Phillies tied it up.

Still, we did not lose hope.

It was, of course…

Torture.

Despite having a tie, the mighty closer Brian Wilson came out to pitch.

Despite some tense moments, he put them down 1-2-3.

In the end it was all up to Juan Uribe, pinch-hitting for the pitcher, who sacrificed out to bring home Aubry Huff in the bottom of the 9th.

And we prevailed.

Now, let’s do it again this year.

#435: SF GIANTS: WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!!!

From skipping class in third grade to head to The Stick, to seeing them beat the Phillies just two weeks ago at AT&T for NLCS game 4….I have been a San Francisco Giants fan my whole life. And it feels so good to finally say, we’ve done it!

My San Francisco Giants are World Series Champions!!!

To Timmy, Bumgarner, Cain and Sanchez, Posey, Huff and Pat, Torres and Sanchez, Renteria and Panda, Bochy and Righetti, Cody and Uribe, Zito, Lopez and Wilson, Schierholtz, Rowand and all the rest–you Deserve it boys! Every bit of it!

To Kruk and Kuip, Miller and Flemming–I listened to you at 4 in the morning from Germany, I listened to you call the final out in game 5 from Hawaii…thanks for calling the games so beautifully, and for the perfect Post-game Wraps.

For Orange October, Fear the Beard, the Freak, “Grab some pine, meat,” F$&k Yeah, and the Rally Thong…

To all you naysayers and sports writers with your East coast bias….there’s a new World Championship team in town, and it’s in San Francisco!

The torture is over. Our San Francisco Giants are World Champions.

HUMMMMMMMM BABY!!!!!!!!!!
